Bottom Story of Day: Lefty Protests against G-8

"The world shaped by the dominance of the G-8 is a world of war, hunger, social divisions, environmental destruction and barriers against migrants and refugees"

That blurb, which reads as if it could have been lifted from Ted Kennedy’s childish tirade against Judge Bork (I know, that was gratuitous), came off the leaflets passed out at the predictable protests marking the start of the G-8 summit in Germany. Alas, also predictably, there were reports of violence:

“Masked demonstrators protesting the upcoming G-8 summit meeting hurled stones and flagpoles at police on Saturday, a spokeswoman said, describing a scene of chaos in the harbor of this northern port city.”

“Earlier, a group of protesters attacked the hotel where an American delegation was supposed to stay during the G-8 summit this week, and some demonstrators also battered police cars with rocks, bottles and paint bombs, authorities said.”

So who was behind all this?

“Dozens of different groups, including communists, anarchists and environmentalists, were taking part… Among the organizers were the anti-globalization group Attac, radical leftists, Christian groups, the Green Party and others.”

Yep – a veritable social justice coalition, just trying to advance the cause of Peace and Environmental Consciousness through the examples of violent acts and littering. And this being an AP report, no story can be complete without hearing from the aggrieved, so writer David Rising closes with a quote from one Kay Stenzel, who succinctly notes:

"They [the G-8 Nations] want to impose their wills upon the poor nations,"

He's right, that’s Sudan's big complaint about Darfur...

What's the G-8's OPS vs. Lefties?
